1. Dry Clean Sensitive Devices
If you want to remove the buildup of dust from inside of sensitive equipment, you should consider dry cleaning the device. Dry cleaning products like lint free wipes and reel based fiber connector cleaner can be some good options to clean your fiber optic cable system without the use of any solvent. These cleaning products can remove loose particles from connector, bulkhead adapters, and other hardware devices.
You can also use compressed air to clean hard-to-reach areas. Use short blasts of air and arm movements to direct the buildup outside the equipment.
2. Use Wet Cleaning Methods
If dry cleaning methods do not remove the dirt, you can use wet cleaning procedures to clean fiber endface. As wet cleaning is not appropriate for certain equipment like bulkheads and receptacles, applying wet cleaning agents on them may cause damage to the entire equipment.
Besides this, make sure that you use proper cleaning techniques. Liquid alcohol may not be removed completely from the adapter or connector which may transport the contaminants to the endface. Also, the residue of liquid alcohol in the small cavities may re-arrange during the connection which may be damaging for the entire fiber optic system. In order to avoid these problems, always wipe the equipment with dry cloth to remove all particles and residues.
3. Ensure Safety While Cleaning Fiber Optic Cables
Fiber optic cleaning can be risky, so it is important that you take appropriate safety measures. Make sure that the cables are disconnected from both ends. Use power meter to check the power output on each fiber to ensure there is no light. Moreover, avoid looking directly into the optical instruments or beams as they may have invisible laser radiations that may cause damage to your eyes. If possible, use safety glasses or video scope to keep your eyes protected.
